SPRING IN THE GARDEN - OCTOBER

SPRING IN THE GARDEN - OCTOBER

On the site, what images are appealing to you and why?

The vegetable, fruit and flowers images.

What do you know about the company who own this website?

They advertise their products and sell. The website has a garden calendar

and their website also has recipes.

Have you been to their shops?

No.

Find on Google maps, the closest Tui Garden shop to our school.

How many kilometres is the shop from our school?

214.6 kilometers

What vegetables should be grown now?

Pumpkin, radish, asparagus, beans, bok choy, beetroot, basil, carrot,

capsicum, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, chilli, cucumber, eggplant, leek,

lettuce, parsley, tomatoes, potatoes, mesclun, sweetcorn, spring onions,

spinach, rocket, silverbeet, rhubarb and courgette.

What public holiday is a traditional weekend for planting tomatoes?

Labour day.

What is better? Growing your own tomatoes or buying them from the

supermarket. Explain your answer.

Well I personally think growing tomatoes is better than buying them

because tomatoes taste better when you grow them by yourself if you

grow them well and properly. Some tomatoes are grown with chemicals

which will affect your body, so growing tomatoes organically is healthier

and better.

Find out how much tomatoes cost at your local supermarket.

My local supermarket is Pak n Save and their tomato cost $5.99.

Which is a better buy and why?

It’s better to grow because the tomatoes you buy from the supermarket

was grown with chemical.

What are some maintenance tips from the site?

  • Mound up the soil around potato plants as the leaves appear through

  • the soil. This will encourage a bigger harvest and protect the crop from the sun.

  • Garlics and Shallots - keep the area around plant weed free.

  • Herbs - cut back sage, thyme and mint to encourage fresh new growth for the summer harvest.

  • Look out for aphids and white cabbage butterfly caterpillar as they will also be actively looking for food. Squash these insects, hose off or wash with warm soapy water.

Why should plants be maintained?

So they can grow well and tasty.

If the images were in black and white, would they help you with understanding

the website? Why?

If the images were black and white it would still help me a bit. Well with colors

it would be more helpful. E.g if you are looking through a website with garden tips,

it would be more helpful because you can see what the finish product will need too look like.

Pick one of the vegetables to plant in our garden. Make a list of how to

plant and maintain this vegetable.

Sweetcorn

Sweetcorn are easy to grow.

  • Needs warm and sunny spot in well drained soil. Spring and Summer is the best time to plant sweetcorn.

  • Prepare soil with organic matter.

  • Add a layer of vegetable mix to plant into.

  • Feed corn and keep soil moist throughout the growing seasons.

  • Stake taller plants and those grown in wind-prone areas.

Building a Xylophone

Activity 1 - Build a Xylophone
Today I have built a Xylophone, it was very easy and fun to make.
What is a Xylophone?
A Xylophone is a type of instruments with various pitch. You can make many
beautiful melody with a Xylophone.

Here are the materials you need
  • Glasses
  • Water
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Tape
  • Scissors
Here is a video of me making the Xylophone
When I tested out the Xylophone, it made many pitch, low pitch, high pitch and medium pitch.
The paper Xylophone sounded good as well and also it made good pitches.

Making a Xylophone with papers and glasses were fun to make. While I was making the glass xylophone, I learnt that the more the glass aren't filled with water, the more the pitch is higher and when the glass is filled with more water, it creates a low pitch
