Responding to Refugees

Refugees by Brian Bilston

They have no need of our help

So do not tell me

These haggard faces could belong to you or me

Should life have dealt a different hand

We need to see them for who they really are

Chancers and scroungers

Layabouts and loungers

With bombs up their sleeves

Cut-throats and thieves

They are not

Welcome here

We should make them

Go back to where they came from

They cannot

Share our food

Share our homes

Share our countries

Instead let us

Build a wall to keep them out

It is not okay to say

These are people just like us

A place should only belong to those who are born there

Do not be so stupid to think that

The world can be looked at another way

This poem is a very powerful poem. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

I certainly agree because it has a reason why it is written

Brian Bilston received a lot of recognition for this poem. Find out what

you can about Brian Bilston and create a DLO to teach others about

who Brian Bilston is. Brian Bilston DLO

Some people will disagree with this poem. Why do you think?

They don’t think this poem will change the world

Why do you think Brian Bilston wrote this poem? So people know t

hat we can share countries, not like one country takes over another.

Who is the target audience for this poem? Everybody

If you could choose the most powerful line in this poem, what would it

be and why?The world can be looked at another way. Because the

world CAN be looked in a another way

What do you think of when you hear the word refugee? People moving

to another country

What are refugees? When other people invade another country and they

have to move to another country

Find out some stories about refugees around the world. Create a DLO to

teach others about your findings. Examples - Syrian refugees,

Afghanistan, Somalia, Kosovo...

Te Oro Workshop

On a cold Tuesday Room 7, Room 10 and Room 9 went to

workshop at Te Oro.

The first thing we did is we put all our lunches into one bag.

Three lunches in one bag.

Next we lined up and walked our way to the bus. The teachers

counted us while we get on the bus. The bus was filled with kids

chit-chattering so loud.

After a short ride, we finally arrived at Te Oro. The building

was made beautifully. All of us lined up and walked inside the building.

There, we took our shoes off and the wahine (girls) quietly

walked inside the

studio followed by the tama (boys). We were greeted with a

powhiri. We

sat on the mats and listen to the group of people singing

a lovely Maori song.

The group of people who led us put us into three groups,

one group was doing basic Maori painting, another one was with doing basic

clay and the last group was doing basic Maori weaving.

I was in the weaving group. We group talked about what to do

before weaving or harvesting the harakeke. After we had the discussion,

whaea said a karakia. Next she split our group into two, the wahine’s

are on group and the other are tama’s.

They gave us four strips of harakeke and a scissor. While

Whaea is teaching us, we follow. After, we to cut the excess

off and we made a whetu. We made two more whetu. Whaea

said we give one the first one to someone and I gave my to

my friend.

Lastly, we had to tell everyone what we made and what we

learnt.

Te Oro was very fun because we learnt and we made. I hope

to go there again.

The contribuition Mr and Mrs Gock to New Zealand

WALT - write paragraphs using

the PEEL acronym

P - Make your point

E - Back it up: support you point

with evidence and examples

E - Explain how the evidence

supports your points
L - Link this to the main point

Topic - Mr and Mrs Gock

contributed a lot to New Zealand

Contribution

They contributed their service

to New Zealand by saving the

kumara and their many inventions.

They won many awards for

contributing. Joe earned the Queen’s

medal.  In 2013 they won the

Bledisloe cup for their service

to horticulture. Joe referred to

himself as an experimenter not a

scientist. People could call them

“citizen scientists”.

When the Black Rot disease spread,

Mr and Mrs Gock gifted their

disease resistance to New Zealand.

They refused to take the money

that the Government gave them.

People also made documentaries

about how they saved the kumara

from the Black Rot disease.

Joe and Fay went through

many problems together but solved it

together. They invented stickers on fruit

and the broccoli box. They investigated

and they collected evidence. They had many

ups and downs but they kept trying until they

figured out the solution to the problem.

Mr and Mrs Gock were married in

1956 and had three daughters Jayne, Raewyn and

Virginia. Fay suddenly died from an illness back

on 21 December 2018. We will remember your

service Fay Gock.

What to do when you're scared, worried or nervous

What to do when you're scared, worried or nervous

Today I read an article about “What to do when you’re scared, worried or nervous”.

What to do:

Nervous or scared

If you’re nervous take a deep breath and count to five. This will help you calm down. Think of something that will distract you from being nervous or such as: thinking about the forest or you looking up at the sky, the clouds. Close your eyes and imagine your in a forest, you hear birds tweeting, leaves rustling. Focus on what’s happening now. Not what will happen tomorrow.

Worried

Talk to someone you trust and talk about how you feel. If you can and want to, try do meditation. Close your eyes, inhale and exhale, hear and imagine.

Relax

You need to relax. Relax you muscles, relax your whole body.

If you don’t know:

  • Breath and count to five. Breathing is one of the best exercise to do.

  • Write down your thoughts in a book. If you can, buy a diary write about how you feel.

  • Connect to nature. Go for a nature walk, look and hear.

  • Write down what you’re grateful for.

I hope this will help you when you are scared, worried or nervous. Do mindfulness.

Fun lesson with Kiwican

Our theme for Kiwican is Positve Relationship and the topic is Fair Play
We started our lesson with an energiser. Our energiser was 21, it was boys vs girls a strategy game

21 Rules:
You need say the number out loud
You can't help
You can only say two numbers

Afterwards we played a game called Human Bowling, it sounded interesting.
We walked outside and made two teams, boys vs girls again. The boys started with the ball, then one of them have to hit us, it was like Bowling but instead its humans.

Human Bowling Rules:
You can't flinch nor move when the ball is near you
You need to be honest

Our last game was a competition between the boys and girl, the is called End of the Road.
The girls beats the boys for today's Kiwican lesson

Reflection Kiwican

Tuesday afternoon we had Kiwi can. Room 7 walked in silence to the Kiwican room there we saw Miss Grace and Mr Simanu. We sat in a circle next we started our energiser and our energiser was the Ice breaker. Miss Grace gave us cones. She told us to take one cone and pass it on, so we passed the cones around and put down the cone in front of us. Then the person with no cone has to stand in the middle and say something about his/her holiday. So one of my classmates had no cone so she had to say something about her holiday, if we can relate to that then we have to move to another cone but you can’t swap with the person next to you.

After we played the Ice breaker we turned around to the whiteboard, on the whiteboard we saw three words, it was Learn, Encourage and Share.
We had to think of one rule and decide where it goes, Miss Grace asked us if that rule goes to Learn, Encourage, Share then whoever got it right they get a point. My classmates were really happy they got one point.

Later that we played Defender. The rule of the game was to roll the ball through another persons legs, so we had to spread our legs apart and we had to only use one hand to push the ball away from getting in between your legs. We had so much fun playing Defender.

What I learnt in Kiwi can is if there were no rules it would not be fair. I also learnt that you always need to have fun and not be a sore loser.
